The U.S. attorney’s office in Albany has subpoenaed New York Attorney General Letitia James and her office for documents and testimony, people familiar with the matter said. One subpoena seeks records tied to the state’s civil fraud lawsuit that resulted in a roughly $454 million judgment against former President Donald Trump, a penalty that now tops half a billion dollars with accrued interest. A second subpoena targets the office’s long-running corruption case against the National Rifle Association. The federal inquiry is understood to be examining whether James or her staff violated civil-rights statutes—often used against officials who allegedly abuse law-enforcement authority—while pursuing the Trump and NRA matters. The Justice Department declined to comment. James, a Democrat who has frequently clashed with Trump, sued him in 2022 for allegedly overstating asset values to obtain favorable financing terms. The verdict, delivered in early 2024, is currently on appeal. In the separate NRA litigation, her office seeks to dissolve the gun-rights group over alleged financial misconduct. Abbe Lowell, counsel to James, denounced the federal probe as “the most blatant and desperate example of this administration carrying out the president’s political retribution campaign,” while a spokesperson for the attorney general said the office “stands strongly behind” its lawsuits. No charges have been filed, and the scope and timing of any grand-jury action remain unclear.
