Conservative commentator Candace Owens is under fire after urging U.S. service members to reject any deployment orders they believe are unjust and instead accept a dishonorable discharge. In remarks circulated online beginning 19 June, Owens argued that “no one should die for a foreign government,” telling troops, “Who cares?” if they are expelled from the ranks. Veterans groups, legal analysts and politicians from across the spectrum condemned the advice, noting that a dishonorable discharge strips former service members of veterans’ benefits and can bar them from most federal employment. Several commentators cited 18 U.S. Code §§ 2383 and 2387, which criminalize inciting insurrection or counseling military insubordination, and urged the Justice Department to review whether Owens’ statements crossed a legal line. The episode was followed by another controversy on 1 July, when Owens said on her video program that former President Donald Trump had phoned her earlier in the year at the request of French President Emmanuel Macron. According to Owens, Trump asked her to stop promoting an unsubstantiated claim that First Lady Brigitte Macron was born male, arguing the dispute was complicating efforts to advance Ukraine-Russia peace talks. Owens said she agreed to a temporary pause but provided no corroborating evidence. Neither Trump’s office, the White House nor the Élysée Palace have commented on Owens’ account. Owens has stood by both sets of remarks even as critics intensify calls for official scrutiny of her exhortations to the military.
Candace Owens: Trump called and asked me to stop talking about Brigitte Macron. https://t.co/n73HK9sVZI
Candace Owens encouraged U.S. soldiers to get dishonorably discharged—and then claimed Trump personally called her to stop talking about Brigitte Macron—all in the same week. Absolutely insane. This isn’t getting enough attention.
