The Pentagon said Monday it is ending the deployment of roughly 700 active-duty Marines sent to Los Angeles last month to protect federal facilities during protests triggered by President Donald Trump’s immigration enforcement raids. The troops will be redeployed to their home base in Twentynine Palms, California, though the department did not specify the exact departure date. Chief Pentagon spokesperson Sean Parnell said the order was issued "with stability returning to Los Angeles," adding that the Marines’ presence "sent a clear message: lawlessness will not be tolerated." The decision comes days after the administration pulled about half of the 4,000 California National Guard members who were dispatched for the same mission in early June. Trump’s decision to send federal forces into the nation’s second-largest city drew legal and political pushback from state and local leaders. Governor Gavin Newsom sued the administration, arguing the federal activation of state troops without his consent was unlawful, while Mayor Karen Bass called the military presence an unnecessary escalation. Although a lower court initially sided with Newsom, a federal appeals court last month allowed the White House to retain control of the Guard pending further review. Bass on Monday hailed the Marines’ withdrawal as "another victory" for Los Angeles, and Newsom renewed his demand that the remaining Guard contingent also depart. The Pentagon, which praised the Marines for "restoring order and upholding the rule of law," has not indicated whether additional federal drawdowns are planned.
