The Trump administration is accelerating its immigration crackdown by opening and planning a series of large-scale detention facilities. Florida this week began operating the 1,300-bed “Deportation Depot” at the former Baker Correctional Institution, the state’s second centre modelled on the remote Everglades complex known as “Alligator Alcatraz.” Hours later, officials in Nebraska confirmed a 280-bed unit dubbed the “Cornhusker Clink” at a repurposed work-ethic camp in McCook. Republican officials in Nevada are polling party members on whether to host a similar site. U.S. Immigration and Customs Enforcement simultaneously carried out what it said were the first deportations of Ukrainian refugees, signalling that humanitarian parolees are now subject to the widening removal effort. Internal government documents obtained by CBS News show Washington has also struck new deportation accords with Honduras and Uganda, allowing those countries to accept migrants who are not their own citizens. The expansion comes amid mounting scrutiny of detention conditions. A Senate inquiry led by Democrat Jon Ossoff has identified more than 500 credible allegations of abuse—including miscarriages and child neglect—across facilities in 25 states since January. Separately, a federal judge in Miami this week dismissed part of a due-process lawsuit challenging operations at “Alligator Alcatraz” but allowed First Amendment claims over attorney access to proceed. Political and commercial fallout is growing. Home Depot forced Florida’s Republican Party to pull “Deport Depot” shirts and hats that mimicked the retailer’s logo, underscoring corporate unease with the administration’s rhetoric. Civil-rights groups, meanwhile, are weighing fresh litigation as detention capacity is projected to more than double to 107,000 beds nationwide under recently signed contracts.
