Habba, whose interim appointment was declared unlawful by U.S. District Judge Matthew Brann last week, used a Fox News interview on Sunday to accuse Judiciary Committee Chair Chuck Grassley and committee member Thom Tillis of siding with Democrats. “You are becoming part of the issue,” she said, warning that continued reliance on the courtesy would keep Republican nominees from advancing in Democratic-led states. Grassley argues that dismantling the practice would harm Republicans when the White House changes hands, and Tillis has said he would vote against any nominee advanced without home-state consent—denying the GOP majority backing needed in committee. Trump amplified Habba’s criticism on Monday, publicly calling on Grassley to move his U.S. attorney and judicial picks and to, in the president’s words, tell Democrats “go to hell.” The dispute underscores an intraparty rift over how aggressively to push nominations and leaves leadership of one of the nation’s largest federal prosecutor’s offices in limbo.
