President Joe Biden on 18 August signed the “One Big Beautiful Bill,” an omnibus Republican-led measure that cleared Congress earlier in the week and represents the administration’s most significant family-policy package of the year. Supporters cast the legislation as a broad mix of tax relief and deregulatory steps aimed at easing household costs and spurring development outside major cities. The law permanently expands several tax benefits, including a higher Child Tax Credit, a richer Adoption Tax Credit, and a more generous Employer-Provided Childcare Credit. It also establishes newborn savings accounts and broadens eligibility for school-choice programs. According to an analysis highlighted by advocates, the Child and Dependent Care Tax Credit could now reach as much as $3,000 for lower-income families, roughly $900 more than before, while employers gain new incentives to subsidize child-care costs. Beyond family benefits, the package lowers certain federal levies, rolls back energy regulations viewed by Republicans as burdensome to small businesses, and earmarks resources for rural infrastructure. Lawmakers from farm and energy-producing districts said the changes would “restore law and order,” stimulate local economies and help parents manage rising expenses, though Democrats have yet to detail their own assessment of the measure’s fiscal impact.
Grateful to spend time at Santa Cruz’s Homeless Persons Health Project, hearing from the people on the frontlines of care for our most vulnerable neighbors. We’ll keep pushing to protect Medicaid so they can continue to serve our most vulnerable communities. https://t.co/DMZuYuMgb5
