CBO Finds Trump’s Tax Law Causes $1,200 Loss for Poorest, $13,600 Gain for Richest, Adds $4 Trillion to Debt
The Congressional Budget Office (CBO) has released an analysis of President Donald Trump’s recently enacted tax legislation, commonly referred to as the "Big Ugly Law" or "Big Beautiful Bill." According to the nonpartisan CBO, the law results in a substantial redistribution of income from lower-income to wealthier Americans. The poorest 10% of American households are projected to lose approximately $1,200 annually, primarily due to cuts in social spending programs such as Medicaid and food assistance. In contrast, the richest 10% are expected to see an average income increase of about $13,600 per year, largely through tax breaks. This legislation is characterized as the largest transfer of wealth from working-class families to the ultra-rich in U.S. history. Additionally, the bill is estimated to add $4 trillion to the national debt. The CBO’s findings have drawn criticism for exacerbating income inequality and increasing financial burdens on struggling families while benefiting billionaires and high-income households.

The GOP’s Big Ugly Bill guts Medicaid, puts hundreds of rural hospitals at risk, and drives doctors & nurses out of Upstate NY. I voted no, called it out on the House floor, and I’m not done—I’ll keep fighting to protect our care. https://t.co/tYiMg2Vhg9

The 'Big, Ugly Law' puts a bullet hole right through Medicaid and the Affordable Healthcare Act. Starting this November, the Affordable Care Act open enrollment will bring higher premiums. This is unacceptable—we should be improving healthcare, not undercutting it. https://t.co/sC90KEGdy1

When accounting for the president’s tariff taxes and the provisions of Republicans’ Big Ugly Bill, 90% of households in America come out worse off due to cuts in healthcare, food assistance, and tax increases on consumers and small businesses. Guess which 10% come out ahead. https://t.co/MmEUVMzBaH
