U.S. Senator Elizabeth Warren on Wednesday called for federal authorities to investigate whether Paramount Global’s $16 million settlement with President Donald Trump amounts to illegal bribery. Warren said the payment—announced as the media company awaits government clearance for its roughly $8 billion merger with Skydance Media—raises “bribery in plain sight” concerns and warranted a full inquiry into possible violations of anti-corruption laws. Paramount agreed last week to resolve Trump’s $20 billion defamation suit over a CBS “60 Minutes” interview with Vice President Kamala Harris. Under the deal, the company will donate $15 million to Trump’s planned presidential library and pay $1 million toward his legal expenses; it also pledged that future interviews with presidential candidates will be released in full transcript. No apology was included. Warren said Paramount refused to answer earlier congressional questions about the settlement and added that she will soon introduce legislation to restrict donations to sitting presidents’ libraries. She was joined in earlier warnings by Senators Bernie Sanders and Ron Wyden, who similarly argued that the payment could have been made to secure regulatory approval for the Skydance transaction. Paramount maintains that the settlement is unrelated to its merger and insists it will follow the legal process. The White House has previously dismissed accusations that the president could be influenced by the payment. Scrutiny has also intensified at the Federal Communications Commission. Democratic commissioner Anna Gomez urged that the license transfer required for the merger be brought to a full commission vote, arguing that approving the deal behind closed doors would set a troubling precedent for press freedom.
