Martha Lía Grajales, a Venezuelan human rights activist and co-director of the NGO Surgentes, was detained by the Venezuelan authorities on August 8, 2025, following her participation in a protest outside the United Nations office in Caracas. The Public Ministry charged her with incitement to hatred, conspiracy with a foreign government, and criminal association, citing actions against Venezuelan institutions and national peace. Despite multiple habeas corpus petitions being denied by the Venezuelan judiciary, international and domestic human rights bodies, including the UN High Commissioner for Human Rights and pro-government human rights committees, called for her immediate release. Grajales was held at the Instituto Nacional de Orientación Femenina (INOF), the country's main women's prison, but was released on the night of August 12, 2025, after receiving a precautionary measure allowing her to face trial in freedom. Her husband confirmed her release and stated she remains accused of crimes she denies committing. The NGO Surgentes denounced the judicial process as a "judicial setup." The Venezuelan authorities continue their investigation as Grajales proceeds with her legal case.
