President Donald Trump convened his Cabinet at the White House at 11 a.m. Eastern on Aug. 26, the seventh such session of his second term and the first since July 8. The meeting, carried live by networks including C-SPAN, Fox News and CNBC, was billed as a public discussion of the administration’s current priorities. High on the agenda is the federal crime crackdown in Washington, D.C. Trump federalized the city’s police force and deployed National Guard troops on Aug. 7. Attorney General Pam Bondi said earlier Tuesday that the operation has resulted in nearly 1,100 arrests and the confiscation of more than 100 illegal firearms, contributing to 12 straight days without a homicide and a week without a carjacking in the capital. Trump has indicated he wants to replicate the initiative in other large cities, telling reporters last week that Chicago is likely next, with New York and San Francisco also under consideration. The Cabinet is also expected to review progress in Russia-Ukraine peace efforts. Trump met Russian President Vladimir Putin in Anchorage on Aug. 15 and hosted Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky and NATO leaders in Washington last week. According to Trump, Putin has agreed in principle to provide security guarantees sought by Kyiv and to participate in a future trilateral meeting with Zelensky. The session follows Trump’s reported dismissal of Federal Reserve Governor Lisa Cook, first noted by MSNBC. The White House has not issued a formal statement on the matter, which would mark the first change on the Fed’s Board of Governors during Trump’s current term.
