A Ukrainian drone strike on a riverside beach in the Russian border city of Kursk has killed four civilians after a five-year-old boy died from severe burns while being transferred to Moscow, acting governor Alexander Khinshtein said on Wednesday. Six other people remain hospitalized, some in critical condition. Moscow alleges the strike was a deliberate attack on civilians, though independent investigators note that a branch of the Defense Ministry’s 18th Central Research Institute, which develops radar and navigation equipment, is located roughly 600 meters from the impact site. In a separate incident the same day, Ukrainian officials reported that a Russian drone attack on the village of Pravdyne in Ukraine’s southern Kherson region killed a 14-month-old boy and injured his 64-year-old great-grandmother. Regional governor Oleksandr Prokudin labelled the strike a war crime, saying the drone targeted the family’s backyard. The twin attacks highlight the expanding use of drones to hit targets far from the front lines as the conflict enters its fourth year. Both Moscow and Kyiv deny intentionally targeting civilians, and the latest strikes add to mounting civilian casualties on each side of the border.
