Meta Platforms has restarted development of its long-rumoured smartwatch and is preparing to show the device at the Meta Connect developer conference scheduled for 17–18 September, according to a report from industry publication DigiTimes. The wearable is said to feature at least one built-in camera and to be produced in partnership with Chinese original-design manufacturer Huaqin, which supplies devices to Samsung, Huawei and Xiaomi. The project, first codenamed “Milan,” was shelved in 2022 after reaching the prototype stage, but work reportedly resumed in early 2024. Unlike health-centric models from Apple and Samsung, Meta’s watch is expected to complement the company’s smart glasses and Quest headsets by using its camera and on-device AI to capture and interpret the user’s surroundings. Initial production is expected to be limited as Meta gauges market interest.
