Russia is expanding its diplomatic footprint in West Africa, the Foreign Ministry said, citing government decisions taken this month. On 17 June, Moscow approved the reopening of its embassy in Togo, restoring a mission that had been closed since the early 1990s. A day later, on 18 June, it authorized the establishment of a new embassy in The Gambia. The moves form part of a broader strategy to deepen political and economic ties across the continent, where Russia has sought to cultivate partnerships in energy, security and trade.
