Russia said on Friday it will shut the Polish consulate in the Baltic exclave of Kaliningrad, effective 29 August, after summoning the Polish chargé d’affaires. The Foreign Ministry in Moscow described the move as a “retaliatory measure” for Warsaw’s decision in June to close the Russian consulate in Krakow amid allegations of Russian sabotage activities on Polish territory. A spokesperson for Poland’s Foreign Ministry said Warsaw would respond in an “adequate” manner but gave no details. The latest tit-for-tat steps deepen a diplomatic rift that has grown since Russia’s full-scale invasion of Ukraine in 2022 and mirror earlier expulsions of diplomats between the two neighbours.
