Meta's Chief Technology Officer, Andrew Bosworth, has identified 2025 as a crucial year for the company's Reality Labs division, which focuses on augmented reality (AR) and virtual reality (VR) technologies. Bosworth stated that the performance of products such as the Ray-Ban Meta AI smart glasses will be a key measure of Meta's execution in the AR/VR market. Since their launch in October 2023, Meta has sold more than two million pairs of Ray-Ban AI smart glasses, with sales outpacing traditional Ray-Bans even before the addition of AI features. EssilorLuxottica, the manufacturer, has set a target to produce 10 million units annually for Meta by the end of 2026. The strong consumer response has attracted competition, with Google partnering with Gentle Monster and Warby Parker to develop Android-based smart glasses, and Apple reportedly preparing to launch its own AI-powered smart glasses in 2026. Bosworth emphasized that market adoption will ultimately determine the success of Meta's AR/VR initiatives, and that internal execution is critical. He referenced advice from former Meta COO Sheryl Sandberg that most companies fail due to poor execution rather than competitive pressure. Meta's 2025 execution timeline will be evaluated at year-end, with a broader assessment of strategy effectiveness by 2030. Meta executives, including CEO Mark Zuckerberg, have indicated that smart glasses are unlikely to replace smartphones in the near future, citing the entrenched ecosystem and convenience of smartphones. Bosworth also noted that Apple's Vision Pro headset, while praised for engineering, was criticized for its weight. Vision Pro is expected to receive updates including brain-computer interface support and further accessibility features. Apple's rumored smart glasses are expected to feature deep Siri integration, improved cameras, and advanced notification management. These features are aimed at addressing current limitations of Meta's Ray-Ban glasses, such as camera quality and notification handling. The competition among Meta, Google, and Apple is expected to intensify as the market for AI-powered smart eyewear evolves.
