Meta is reportedly preparing to launch a thin and lightweight XR headset in 2026, designed to resemble eyeglasses and powered by a separate puck-style compute unit. The device, codenamed 'Loma,' is expected to be priced below $1,000 and offer more power than the Quest 3 series. According to the Wall Street Journal, Meta is in talks with entertainment brands such as Disney and A24 to create exclusive immersive content for the headset, which is intended to compete with Apple's Vision Pro. Meta has reportedly canceled its Quest 4 headset in favor of this new design. The company continues to develop its smart glasses portfolio, with Ray-Ban Meta Smartglasses having sold over 2 million units to date. Meta's Orion project, which would cost $10,000 per unit at current production levels, is also advancing through a partnership with defense technology firm Anduril to support development for both government and consumer applications. Meta's recent updates to its Spatial SDK for Horizon OS include passthrough camera access, improved hand tracking, hybrid app support, a customizable UI Set, and performance enhancements for smoother mixed reality experiences. The SDK now features tools such as the Android Studio plugin, Spatial Editor 2.0, and the open-source Premium Media Sample. The Spatial Scanner showcase demonstrates new capabilities, and these updates are intended to empower Android developers to build advanced spatial applications for Meta devices.
