Argentine President Javier Milei was rushed from a campaign convoy on Wednesday after protesters hurled stones and bottles at his vehicle in Lomas de Zamora, a densely populated suburb south of Buenos Aires. Security agents shielded the 54-year-old leader, his sister and aide Karina Milei, and libertarian lawmaker José Luis Espert before diverting the motorcade. Government officials said the president was unharmed and that no members of his team or bystanders were injured. Presidential spokesman Manuel Adorni blamed Peronist opponents for the violence, while provincial police opened an investigation that, according to local reports, led to at least two arrests. Milei later posted a photograph from the presidential residence in Olivos and vowed to press on with campaigning. The confrontation comes amid mounting tension ahead of a 7 September vote in Buenos Aires province and nationwide mid-term elections in October. Demonstrators referenced recently leaked audio recordings in which former disability-agency head Diego Spagnuolo alleges a kickback scheme involving Karina Milei; the president has dismissed the claims as “false” and pledged legal action. Earlier in the day the Treasury rolled over about 7.7 trillion pesos (roughly US$7.8 billion) of local debt, paying yields of up to 75.7%. While the successful auction eased near-term refinancing pressure, it underscored the difficult economic backdrop against which Milei is seeking broader political support.
