Austrian authorities placed International Atomic Energy Agency Director General Rafael Grossi under 24-hour protection in late June after intelligence services identified a specific threat linked to Iran, according to people familiar with the matter cited by the Wall Street Journal. Members of Austria’s elite Cobra special police unit are guarding the U.N. nuclear watchdog chief at all times. The move followed a campaign by Tehran accusing Grossi and the agency of contributing to a 12-day conflict that began with Israel’s June strike on Iranian targets and a subsequent U.S. bombing ordered by President Donald Trump. The IAEA and Austria’s Interior Ministry have not commented publicly on the security measures. Iran’s representation to the U.N. nuclear agency has yet to respond to requests for comment.
