Tesla Chief Executive Officer Elon Musk said on Wednesday that the company is training an upgraded version of its Full Self-Driving software featuring roughly ten times the number of parameters and markedly lower video-compression loss. If validation goes smoothly, the new model could begin rolling out to customers by the end of September. The sharp expansion in model size marks the latest step in Tesla’s effort to move from advanced driver assistance toward higher levels of autonomy. The carmaker’s FSD neural networks were estimated at about one billion parameters in 2022 and grew fivefold with a mid-2024 update; the planned jump would push the system into the tens of billions of parameters, potentially boosting perception accuracy and decision-making speed. Autonomous driving remains central to Musk’s long-term strategy for generating software revenue and differentiating Tesla in an increasingly competitive electric-vehicle market. The announcement comes as Tesla shares have fallen roughly 24% so far this year amid pressure on vehicle sales and pricing.
