The Brazilian public health system, Sistema Único de Saúde (SUS), will begin offering the Implanon contraceptive implant free of charge starting in the second half of 2025. Announced by the Ministry of Health, the Implanon is a subdermal hormonal implant that releases etonogestrel and prevents unplanned pregnancies. It is recognized for its long duration of action, effective for up to three years, and is considered advantageous compared to other contraceptive methods currently available. The implant, which can cost between R$2,000 and R$4,000 in the private sector, will be gradually distributed with a planned total of 1.8 million units by 2026. This initiative represents an investment of R$245 million by the Ministry of Health to expand access to modern contraceptive options for women of reproductive age across Brazil.
