
Brazil’s Federal Highway Police said a bus traveling from Cuiabá to Sinop collided head-on with a truck late Friday on the BR-163 highway near Lucas do Rio Verde, in the central-western state of Mato Grosso, killing at least 11 people and injuring 46. The concessionaire Nova Rota do Oeste, which manages the road, reported that 12 of the injured were in critical condition, 26 sustained moderate injuries and eight had minor wounds. The truck was transporting cottonseed, while the bus belonged to Rio Novo Transportes. Civil police have opened an investigation to determine the cause of the crash. After overnight removal of the wreckage and cleaning of the roadway, traffic was fully restored early Saturday.
