Marcus Fakana, a 19-year-old British teenager from Tottenham, has been released from prison in Dubai following a royal pardon granted by the ruler of Dubai. Fakana was sentenced in December to a one-year prison term after being convicted for having a consensual sexual relationship with a 17-year-old British girl during a holiday in the UAE. His release and return to the UK have been confirmed by the Foreign Office. Campaigners and legal observers noted that the pardon was issued to avoid Dubai appearing draconian to tourists. Fakana spent approximately seven months in prison before his release. The case has drawn attention to the legal risks faced by tourists in Dubai regarding relationships that are legal in the UK but subject to different laws in the UAE.
