British counter-terror police have charged Hashem Abedi, the man convicted of helping his brother plan the 2017 Manchester Arena suicide attack, with five new offences linked to an assault on guards at HMP Frankland. Prosecutors allege that Abedi attempted to murder three prison officers during an incident in April that left four staff members injured. He also faces one charge of assault occasioning actual bodily harm and one count of unauthorised possession of a knife. Abedi, who is serving a life term with a 55-year minimum for the bombing that killed 22 people and wounded more than 200, is due to appear at Westminster Magistrates’ Court on 18 September.
