US President Donald Trump and UK Prime Minister Keir Starmer met on 28 July at Trump’s Turnberry resort in Scotland and later continued discussions in Aberdeen. In a joint statement, the two leaders said they had agreed on the “necessity for rapid humanitarian aid” and urged an immediate cease-fire to end the worsening suffering in Gaza. The talks also reviewed the recently concluded UK-US trade agreement and Britain’s bid for relief from US duties on steel and aluminium. Starmer pressed for lower tariffs, while Trump reiterated that the deal was largely complete, leaving the 50% levies in place for now. Both sides said technical work would continue before Trump’s 1 August deadline for any final adjustments. The meeting came midway through a five-day trip that has blended diplomacy with business promotion. On 29 July, Trump cut a ribbon to open a second course at his Trump International estate near Aberdeen, capping a visit that also included negotiations with EU officials on reducing US tariffs on European goods to 15%.
