Apple Inc. has commenced early prototyping of its first foldable iPhone, initiating the Prototype 1 (P1) phase in June 2025, with plans to complete testing by the end of 2025 and enter the Engineering Validation Test (EVT) phase. The company targets a launch in the second half of 2026, potentially as part of the iPhone 18 lineup. The foldable iPhone is expected to feature a book-style design with a crease-free 7.8-inch inner OLED display and a 5.5-inch outer display. Apple is reportedly collaborating with Samsung Display for the production of the foldable screens, strengthening their partnership and also involving hinge supplier Fine M-Tec. The foldable iPad project has been paused due to higher production costs and weaker demand. Concurrently, Apple is developing iOS 27 with a focus on new features optimized for the foldable device. The foldable iPhone is anticipated to include quad cameras and Touch ID. Industry analysts suggest that the launch could boost key suppliers such as Samsung Display, Foxconn, and Luxshare. The device is expected to compete with existing foldable smartphones from Samsung and Google, marking Apple's entry into the foldable smartphone market after several years of Samsung's leadership in the category.
