Samsung Electronics used its Galaxy Unpacked showcase in New York on 9 July to unveil three new foldable smartphones—the book-style Galaxy Z Fold 7, the clamshell Galaxy Z Flip 7 and a lower-priced Galaxy Z Flip 7 FE. All three devices are thinner and lighter than last year’s models and incorporate expanded on-device generative-AI features aimed at broadening the appeal of foldables ahead of Apple’s expected entry into the segment next year. The Z Fold 7, which features an 8-inch inner OLED display, a 200-megapixel main camera and Qualcomm’s Snapdragon 8 Elite chipset, is priced at about ₹1.75 lakh (roughly US$2,100) in India. Samsung said the new lineup will reach stores worldwide on 25 July, with pre-orders opening immediately after the launch. On 21 July the company announced that combined pre-orders for the Fold 7, Flip 7 and Flip 7 FE have set an all-time record in South Korea, although it did not disclose shipment volumes. Customers in markets including South Korea, India and Australia have begun receiving shipping notifications ahead of the official release date. Samsung Display separately reported that Bureau Veritas testing showed the Fold 7’s OLED panel remains fully functional after 500,000 folds—more than twice the durability certified for the Fold 6 and equivalent to around ten years of average use. The improvement is attributed to a shock-resistant hinge, thicker ultra-thin glass and a lighter titanium frame. Looking beyond the current range, mobile chief TM Roh and smartphone-planning vice-president Minseok Kang said Samsung intends to commercialise its first tri-fold smartphone before the end of 2025, joining Huawei in a still nascent product category. The move comes as Chinese rival Honor touts the 8.8-millimetre-thick Magic V5 and as global competition in premium foldables intensifies.
