McDonald’s will begin selling a trio of Spicy McMuffin breakfast sandwiches across the United States on 8 July, marking the first time the items have appeared on national menus in five years. The limited-time line-up—Spicy McMuffin, Spicy Sausage McMuffin and Spicy Sausage McMuffin with Egg—adds the company’s signature Spicy Pepper Sauce to the traditional English-muffin format. The rollout coincides with the 50th anniversary of the Egg McMuffin, introduced in 1975, and comes as the fast-food chain looks to reignite morning traffic. Chief executive officer Chris Kempczinski told investors in April that U.S. customers have been visiting less frequently at breakfast, even as chief financial officer Ian Borden said the segment remains a share driver. The new sandwiches follow other recent menu promotions, including a Blueberry & Crème Pie and the Daily Double burger. McDonald’s said the spicy sandwiches will be available at participating restaurants for a limited period but did not specify an end date. Prices will be set by individual franchisees.
