Fast-food and convenience chains across the United States are rolling out giveaways and discounts on Friday, July 11, to mark National French Fry Day. The unofficial food holiday, now set for the second Friday of July, will see McDonald’s, Burger King, Wendy’s, Sheetz and dozens of other brands handing out free or cut-price fries both in stores and through mobile apps. McDonald’s is offering MyMcDonald’s Rewards users a free medium order with any $1 in-app purchase and has added an additional no-charge serving through Sunday, July 13. Burger King’s Royal Perks members can collect free fries of any size with a $1 spend, while Wendy’s app users get complimentary Hot & Crispy Fries of any size with purchase. Sheetz customers can pick up a free bag of fries from July 11-13, and chains such as Arby’s, Checkers & Rally’s, Del Taco, Fatburger, Smashburger, Wayback Burgers and Jack in the Box have announced similar one-day or weekend promotions. The industry push comes as Americans’ appetite for fries shows no sign of slowing. A Talker Research survey commissioned by McCain Foods found the average U.S. consumer eats 17 pounds of fries a year, amounting to roughly 5.6 billion pounds nationwide; Virginia tops the list at 21 pounds per person. National French Fry Day moved to its new July slot after a 2022 online petition spearheaded by Checkers & Rally’s.
