The Riverside County Sheriff’s Office said on Monday that no criminal charges will be filed against Pro Football Hall of Famer John Elway in the death of his longtime friend and business partner, Jeffrey Sperbeck. Investigators concluded that Sperbeck’s fatal fall from a golf cart driven by the former Denver Broncos quarterback was a “tragic accident,” Sheriff Chad Bianco told local media. Sperbeck, 62, tumbled from the rear of the cart on 26 April at The Madison Club, a private golf community in La Quinta, east of Los Angeles. A county coroner’s report listed the cause of death as blunt-force head trauma and classified the manner as accidental. Video reviewed by detectives showed no evidence of reckless driving, mechanical failure or impairment, according to Bianco. Elway did not immediately comment on the sheriff’s findings. In a statement issued after Sperbeck’s death in April, he said he was “devastated and heartbroken” by the loss. Sperbeck had represented Elway since 1990 and later co-managed the former quarterback’s business ventures, including car dealerships, restaurants and a winery.
