Illinois authorities say the driver suspected of killing 15-year-old cyclist Nick Laureys in a hit-and-run last week was found dead in a Woodstock home, bringing the seven-day manhunt to an abrupt end. Laureys and another teenager were biking south on Terra Cotta Road near Deering Oaks Lane in unincorporated Crystal Lake around 9:30 p.m. on July 2 when a dark-red 2017–18 Jeep Cherokee struck Laureys from behind and sped away, according to the McHenry County Sheriff’s Office. The boy died of his injuries at a hospital later that night. Woodstock police discovered both the suspect’s body and a vehicle matching the description during a July 4 death investigation at a residence. The sheriff’s office subsequently confirmed the deceased individual was the sole suspect in the crash, but has not released the person’s name pending autopsy results. Investigators say no additional suspects are being sought.
