Canada’s new prime minister, Mark Carney, continues to enjoy a strong post-election honeymoon. A Leger poll conducted 4 August among 1,617 adults found 56 percent approval for his overall performance. Separate Gallup research released this week put his approval at 59 percent, while a tracking survey on 14 August showed support climbing to 64 percent, up three points since late July. Pollsters report Carney is viewed favorably on key files such as the economy, immigration and relations with Washington. The same Gallup study highlights a sharp deterioration in Canadian attitudes toward Washington. Only 15 percent of Canadians approve of U.S. leadership, while 79 percent disapprove—a net rating of minus 64. By comparison, Germany enjoys a positive net score of plus 35, while China and Russia post negatives of 41 and 73 respectively. In the United States, President Donald Trump’s standing is trending the other way. Pew Research finds his national approval at 38 percent, with 60 percent disapproving, six months into his second term. Rasmussen’s daily tracker for 14 August shows a roughly even split at 48 percent approval and 49 percent disapproval. Morning Consult notes a steeper slump among Medicaid recipients, whose support has fallen to 36 percent from 52 percent in January. Separate polling shows the share of Republican-leaning voters who back ‘all or most’ of Trump’s policies has slipped nine points since February, to 58 percent. The divergence underscores the contrasting political climates on either side of the border: a popular newcomer in Ottawa versus a U.S. president confronting mounting public fatigue at home and waning goodwill abroad.

Another sign that Trump voters are souring on him, at least somewhat. In February, 67% of GOP-leaners said they supported "all" or "most" of his policies. It's now dropped to 58%. https://t.co/M1sKZ3EFnI
