China is confronting its largest outbreak of the chikungunya virus, primarily concentrated in Guangdong Province's Foshan city. Since mid-June, over 7,000 cases have been reported across at least 13 cities, with Guangdong reporting 1,387 new cases from August 3 to 9, a notable decline from nearly 3,000 cases in previous weeks. Chinese authorities have implemented strict preventive measures reminiscent of Covid-19 protocols, including chemical spraying, quarantine hospitalizations, and patient isolation to contain the mosquito-borne disease. The government has mobilized extensive health campaigns and introduced a four-tier risk classification system for infectious diseases, designating regions such as Guangxi Zhuang Autonomous Region as Category I risk areas for chikungunya. Hong Kong has reported five imported cases and issued warnings amid rising cases across Asia. The U.S. Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) has issued a Level 2 travel advisory for China due to the outbreak, although U.S. health experts consider the risk of widespread transmission in the U.S. low, predicting only isolated outbreaks of up to a couple hundred cases. The outbreak has prompted renewed efforts to combat mosquitoes, including the use of unconventional methods like deploying cannibalistic mosquitoes. Despite the challenges, more than 90% of patients in Foshan have reportedly recovered, and new case numbers are declining, indicating early success in containment efforts.
