China has widened its visa-free regime to cover citizens of 74 countries, allowing stays of up to 30 days as the government seeks to accelerate the recovery of inbound tourism and bolster consumer spending. The latest expansion, announced this week, follows a series of incremental additions since late 2023. The National Immigration Administration said 13.64 million foreigners entered the mainland without visas in the first half of 2025, a 54 percent increase from a year earlier and equal to 71 percent of all foreign arrivals. Overall, foreign nationals made 38.05 million cross-border trips during the period, up 30.2 percent year on year. Traffic through Beijing Daxing International Airport reflects the rebound: the port handled more than 3 million crossings so far this year, a 30.4 percent rise from the same period in 2024, and set a 2025 single-day record of 19,200 on 13 July. Travel operators anticipate further gains during the summer high season, although inbound visitor numbers remain below the 31.9 million recorded in 2019, the last full year before the pandemic.
China issued more than 10.6 million ordinary passports and 47.4 million entry-exit permits for Chinese mainland residents travelling to and from Hong Kong, Macao, and Taiwan in the first half of the year, the National Immigration Administration said today. https://t.co/QpOtE0usib
The visits may be up but China was just coming out of Covid lockdowns then. There are way fewer foreigners in China compared to 2019. https://t.co/csct3Fu7FU
