China cautioned on Tuesday that "trade wars have no winners" after U.S. President Donald Trump threatened to impose secondary sanctions on any country or company purchasing Russian exports unless the Kremlin agrees to a peace deal within 50 days over the conflict in Ukraine. The warning from Beijing, delivered by the foreign ministry, comes as the White House weighs measures that could disrupt flows of Russian crude and refined products to its largest customers—China, India and Turkey. According to the International Energy Agency, China alone imports about 2 million barrels of Russian oil per day, worth roughly $130 million, while India buys around 1.8 million barrels and Turkey about 400,000 barrels. Analysts say penalising buyers could squeeze global supply chains and further strain U.S.–China economic ties already battered by steep tariffs and technology disputes. Beijing urged Washington to pursue dialogue rather than coercion, reiterating that broad sanctions risk undermining stability in energy markets and hindering prospects for a negotiated settlement in Ukraine.
