China is confronting an outbreak of chikungunya fever, a mosquito-borne viral disease, primarily in Guangdong province's southern city of Foshan. Since early July, over 7,700 cases have been reported in Guangdong, with a peak of 2,892 cases between July 27 and August 2. Recent data shows a decline in new cases, with 1,387 reported from August 3 to 9, indicating early success of containment efforts. Authorities have implemented extensive measures including real-name registration for fever and pain relief medication purchases, deployment of mosquito-eating fish, insecticide spraying, drone surveillance of mosquito breeding sites, installation of nets on drains, and restrictions reminiscent of COVID-19 pandemic protocols. Foshan city has reported that more than 90% of patients have recovered. The outbreak has also affected neighboring regions, with Hong Kong confirming five imported cases. In response, the U.S. Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) has issued a Level 2 travel advisory for China due to the chikungunya surge. The World Health Organization has warned globally about the spread of chikungunya. While the virus is not transmitted person-to-person, symptoms typically appear 3 to 7 days after a mosquito bite and include fever and joint pain. Meanwhile, Bangladesh is experiencing a surge in dengue cases, another mosquito-borne disease, with health experts cautioning of a potentially more severe outbreak in August if urgent measures are not taken.
