China is confronting an outbreak of chikungunya fever, a mosquito-borne viral disease, primarily in Guangdong province, where over 7,700 cases have been reported since early July. Foshan city, a core affected area, has implemented strict measures including real-name registration for purchasing fever and pain relief medications, widespread insecticide spraying, deployment of mosquito-eating fish, drone surveillance, and installation of mosquito nets in drainage systems. These efforts have led to a decline in new daily cases, with 1,387 new infections reported between August 3 and 9, down from nearly 3,000 cases in previous weeks. More than 90% of patients in Foshan have recovered. Authorities have mobilized extensive public health campaigns in neighboring cities like Zhongshan and Zhanjiang to prevent further spread. The outbreak has prompted the U.S. Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) to issue a Level 2 travel advisory for China, warning travelers about the mosquito-borne virus. Meanwhile, Hong Kong has reported five imported cases, raising concerns over regional spread. The World Health Organization has also cautioned globally about the spread of chikungunya. Chinese scientists have developed an intelligent mosquito surveillance system to enhance monitoring and control of mosquito-borne diseases. While the virus is not transmissible from person to person, symptoms typically appear 3 to 7 days after an infected mosquito bite and include fever and joint pain. The outbreak has led China to revive some preventive strategies used during the COVID-19 pandemic to contain the virus.
