China’s foreign ministry said Foreign Minister Wang Yi will travel to India from Aug. 18 to 20 for the 24th round of talks under the Special Representatives mechanism, the key channel for addressing the two countries’ Himalayan border dispute. Wang, who also serves on the Communist Party’s Politburo, is scheduled to meet National Security Adviser Ajit Doval and External Affairs Minister Subrahmanyam Jaishankar in New Delhi. The session will mark only the second Special Representatives meeting since Indian and Chinese troops clashed in the Galwan Valley in 2020, an incident that killed 20 Indian soldiers and an unspecified number of Chinese personnel. Relations have shown tentative improvement after both sides agreed last October to resume joint patrols along parts of the frontier, though direct commercial flights and much cross-border investment remain suspended. Diplomats in both capitals view the talks as groundwork for Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s planned visit to Tianjin for the Shanghai Cooperation Organisation summit on Aug. 31, where a bilateral meeting with President Xi Jinping is being explored. A successful round could help stabilise ties between Asia’s two largest nations after five years of military and economic friction.
