A Chinese People’s Liberation Army Navy Type 052D destroyer (hull number DDG-164) collided with China Coast Guard ship CCG-3104 on 11 August while both vessels were chasing the Philippine patrol craft BRP Suluan near Scarborough Shoal in the South China Sea, according to statements from the Philippine Coast Guard and regional media footage. Philippine authorities said the coast-guard ship had earlier been targeted with water cannon before the two Chinese vessels executed high-speed manoeuvres that ended with the collision. The impact reportedly caused significant bow damage to CCG-3104, rendering it unseaworthy, while the destroyer appeared to sustain lesser harm. No injuries have been confirmed. China’s embassy in Manila has not commented. Later the same day, China’s Coast Guard announced it had taken "necessary measures" to expel Philippine vessels from the shoal, which Beijing refers to as Huangyan Dao. The incident heightens tensions over the disputed reef, a flashpoint since China took control in 2012 despite a 2016 international arbitration ruling that undermined Beijing’s sweeping claims to the South China Sea.
