OpenAI Disrupts Five Covert Influence Operations Using ChatGPT and DALL-E

OpenAI, led by Sam Altman, has disrupted five covert influence operations that used its AI models, including ChatGPT and DALL-E, for deceptive activities. These operations, identified in a report released on Thursday, involved threat actors from Russia, China, Iran, and Israel. The AI-generated content was used to manipulate public opinion and influence geopolitics. Notably, an Israeli company named STOIC was found to be operating a network of accounts pushing pro-Israel and anti-Hamas content. Additionally, OpenAI uncovered efforts to interfere in the 2024 Indian Lok Sabha elections, with foreign entities generating content critical of the ruling BJP party and supportive of the opposition Congress party. Meta and TikTok also reported similar findings, highlighting the widespread use of AI in disinformation campaigns.
