Tesla Inc. has introduced a new six-seat version of its best-selling sport-utility vehicle, the Model Y L, for the Chinese market. A post on the company’s official Weibo account late Tuesday announced immediate availability at a starting price of 339,000 yuan (about $47,000), roughly 8 percent above the standard Model Y. Deliveries are scheduled to begin in September, according to the announcement. Regulatory filings show the Model Y L rides on a wheelbase about 200 millimeters longer than the regular model, allowing a three-row layout with individual second-row captain’s chairs. Tesla says the vehicle offers 527 miles of range on China’s CLTC test cycle—about 327 miles on the U.S. EPA standard—and can accelerate from 0–62 mph in 4.5 seconds. Interior upgrades include a black headliner, new ventilated and heated seats, an enlarged 16-inch center display, and an 18-speaker audio system. The launch comes as Tesla faces intensifying competition from BYD, Xiaomi and Xpeng in the world’s largest electric-vehicle market, where the company’s second-quarter sales fell nearly 12 percent year-on-year. Analysts say the larger Model Y could help Tesla defend share in the crowded midsize SUV segment while leveraging its Shanghai plant’s flexible production lines. Tesla shares edged about 0.6 percent higher in after-hours trading following the announcement.
