President Donald Trump warned on Monday that the United States will levy tariffs of about 200% on Chinese imports if Beijing does not resume shipments of rare-earth magnets. Speaking to reporters at the White House, Trump said China "has to give us magnets" and asserted that Washington could use its tariff authority to halt virtually all bilateral trade should the dispute escalate. The remarks come four months after Beijing tightened export controls on several rare-earth elements and finished magnets—materials that underpin electric-vehicle motors, wind turbines and consumer electronics—in retaliation for earlier U.S. tariff increases. China accounts for roughly 90% of the world’s rare-earth output, giving it considerable leverage over global supply chains. Trump added that President Xi Jinping had invited him to visit China and said a trip could take place later this year. He predicted the United States would secure “plenty of magnets in a short time,” but offered no details on alternative sources or domestic production plans.
