A Colombian judge has determined that the State, specifically the National Protection Unit (UNP), bears responsibility by omission in the assassination attempt against Senator and presidential pre-candidate Miguel Uribe Turbay. The ruling came during the hearing for the measure of assurance against alias "El Costeño," the alleged logistical mastermind behind the attack, who was arrested on July 5. The judge noted that there were over 20 requests from Uribe Turbay to improve his protection scheme, which were denied by the UNP. Authorities have made progress in the investigation, with five individuals captured so far, including alias "El Costeño," whose real name is Elder José Arteaga. Arteaga is a criminal with over 20 years of activity and is linked to multiple homicides across Bogotá and other Colombian cities. The investigation also revealed potential complicity by 12 police officers in Bogotá who are accused of neglecting their duties and aiding criminal groups. The case remains active, and further arrests are not ruled out.
