Six former commanders of the Revolutionary Armed Forces of Colombia (FARC) formally acknowledged before the Special Jurisdiction for Peace (JEP) that they forcibly recruited more than 18,000 minors during the Colombian armed conflict. The recruitment occurred between 1971 and 2016, with the tribunal previously imputing six ex-commanders in late 2024 for war crimes related to the forced recruitment of at least 18,677 children from 1996 to 2006. While the ex-FARC leaders accepted collective responsibility for the recruitment, they denied involvement in torture, sexual abuse, and forced abortions. Victims have expressed dissatisfaction with the ex-commanders' explanations, particularly regarding the justification given for forced abortions, which were reportedly imposed on underage girls to prevent stress. The FARC's latest secretariat's admission marks a significant development in Colombia's ongoing peace and transitional justice process.
