Body-camera footage released this week by the Cobb County Police Department shows officers smashing a window at Cumberland Mall in Atlanta to rescue a one-year-old girl and a two-year-old boy who had been left in a locked car on 4 June. An infrared thermometer registered 117°F (47°C) inside the vehicle, while the outdoor temperature peaked at roughly 87°F. Investigators say the children’s father, 27-year-old J’quawn Dixon, parked at 12:24 p.m. and entered the mall. A 911 call about crying children was placed shortly before 1 p.m.; officers arrived at 1:03 p.m. and removed the toddlers, who did not require hospital treatment. Dixon was arrested when he returned about 40 minutes after leaving the car and was charged with two felony counts of second-degree child cruelty. He posted a $10,000 bond the following day. Police credited bystanders for alerting authorities and emphasized the dangers of rapidly rising temperatures inside parked vehicles, which have been linked to a growing number of hot-car incidents nationwide.
