Los Angeles police arrested a suspected kidnapper and car thief on Tuesday after a high-speed pursuit through the Van Nuys section of the San Fernando Valley. The driver of a white sport-utility vehicle repeatedly reached roughly 80 miles per hour on residential streets, at times traveling on the wrong side of the road and cutting through parking lots to evade officers. Ground units temporarily disengaged while an LAPD helicopter maintained visual contact as the suspect circled the same few blocks. Shortly after 10:30 a.m. local time, the vehicle stopped, and the driver exited, lay face-down on the pavement and surrendered without further incident. No injuries or collisions were reported, and authorities have not said whether an alleged kidnapping victim was inside the vehicle. The investigation is ongoing.
