Gunfire erupted in downtown Indianapolis shortly after 1:30 a.m. on Saturday, killing two people and wounding five others, the Indianapolis Metropolitan Police Department said. Officers already patrolling the area near West Market and North Illinois streets for a separate disturbance heard the shots and rushed to the scene. One victim died at the intersection, and a juvenile succumbed to injuries at a hospital, according to Deputy Chief Tanya Terry. The seven people struck by bullets included at least three minors, while the remaining victims were adults. Police recovered several firearms and detained about seven individuals for questioning. In the hours surrounding the shooting, officers made roughly 20 arrests and confiscated weapons from two minors, including an assault-style rifle, IMPD added. Chief Chris Bailey described the violence as “unacceptable” and urged parents to keep closer watch over young people gathering downtown after the city’s Fourth of July fireworks. Investigators have not released information on a motive, and the shooting remains under investigation.
