A series of overnight shootings in Washington, D.C., left at least five people injured on the heels of Independence Day celebrations, the Metropolitan Police Department (MPD) said. The most serious case involves a three-year-old girl who was struck by gunfire shortly after 3:00 a.m. Saturday while sitting in a parked car with relatives in the 1000 block of 14th Street SE. She remains hospitalized in critical condition. Preliminary findings indicate at least one suspect opened fire in the block, hitting the vehicle and the child. MPD’s Major Case Squad is leading the investigation, and the department is offering a $10,000 reward for information leading to an arrest and conviction. “We have a team of detectives on this case, following up on every lead,” Chief Pamela A. Smith said in a statement, urging witnesses to call 202-727-9099 or text 50411. Within hours of the toddler’s shooting, police were called to four other incidents: a woman with life-threatening injuries on the 2000 block of Benning Road NE; a man who was conscious and breathing after being shot on the 3500 block of Hayes Street NE; an adult male wounded on the 1200 block of Half Street SE near Nationals Park; and another victim on the 1200 block of Sumner Road SE. No arrests have been announced in any of the cases, and investigators said they have not determined whether the shootings are connected. The burst of gun violence follows a citywide push to curb illegal firearms and comes as MPD steps up patrols during the holiday weekend. Police are asking residents with surveillance footage or other information from any of the affected neighborhoods to come forward.
