Country singer-songwriter Conner Smith has been issued a state misdemeanor citation after a police investigation into a June 8 collision that killed a pedestrian in Nashville’s Germantown neighborhood. The Metropolitan Nashville Police Department said the 24-year-old was cited on July 10 for failure to yield the right of way resulting in death, a Class A misdemeanor that carries a potential penalty of up to one year in jail and a $2,500 fine. Smith is scheduled to appear for booking on Aug. 7. Investigators determined that Smith was driving a Chevrolet Silverado north on 3rd Avenue North when he struck Dorothy Dobbins, 77, as she crossed the street in a marked crosswalk shortly after 7:30 p.m. First responders took Dobbins to Vanderbilt University Medical Center, where she died. Police said the singer showed no signs of impairment or distracted driving, and witnesses reported he attempted to assist the victim at the scene. In an Instagram statement released July 11, Smith said “not a day has gone by that I haven’t grieved, prayed, and mourned” for Dobbins and her family, adding that he stepped away from performances in the weeks following the crash. His attorney, Worrick Robinson IV, said Smith has cooperated fully with authorities and intends to support pedestrian-safety initiatives. City officials have since installed additional crosswalk signage and removed an obstructing tree at the intersection where the accident occurred.
