Alexi Saenz, the leader of a notorious MS-13 clique known as the Sailors Locos Salvatruchas Westside in the suburbs of New York City, was sentenced to 68 years in prison on July 2, 2025. The federal racketeering case involved eight murders on Long Island, including the 2016 killings of two high school girls, one of whom was 16-year-old Kayla Cuevas. Saenz was convicted of orchestrating a wave of violence that also included multiple attempted murders, arson, narcotics trafficking, and firearms offenses. The sentencing followed emotional impact statements from the victims' families. Separately, on July 9, 2025, U.S. Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE) arrested another MS-13 kingpin in Omaha, Nebraska. This individual was wanted for five aggravated murders in El Salvador and was on that country's most wanted fugitives list. ICE also apprehended an associate of the kingpin. The arrests were praised by several U.S. officials, who highlighted the ongoing efforts to combat gang-related crime and illegal immigration.
