A collegiate court in Jalisco on Tuesday sentenced ten men to 141 years and three months in prison each and ordered them to pay 1.3 million pesos (about US$65,000) in damages after finding them guilty of aggravated forced disappearance and qualified homicide. The ruling closes a week-long sentencing hearing that followed a July 8 verdict and is among the toughest penalties imposed in the state for disappearance-related crimes. The defendants were captured on 18 September 2024 when National Guard troops raided Rancho Izaguirre in the municipality of Teuchitlán, about 60 kilometres west of Guadalajara, responding to reports of gunfire. Soldiers exchanged shots with armed men, liberated two kidnapping victims and discovered a dead body before detaining the suspects and seizing weapons and vehicles. Prosecutors said the ranch operated as a forced-recruitment and training site for the Jalisco New Generation Cartel. In March search collectives located hundreds of personal belongings and human-bone fragments at the property, intensifying scrutiny of earlier investigative lapses by state authorities. Federal and state prosecutors are still pursuing related cases against three municipal police officers, an alleged CJNG recruiter and local officials, including the mayor of Teuchitlán. The Rancho Izaguirre proceedings have become a focal point in Mexico’s broader crisis of more than 120,000 missing persons, over 15,000 of them in Jalisco.
